On June 23 , 1804, Captain Lewis and the boat crews set up camp
across the Missouri at this spot. Captain Clark was walking ahead
on shore. The wind held the boats back so Lewis decided to make
camp here. Meanwhile, Clark had walked ahead into Jackass Bend -
about 6 miles above the camp. When he realized they would not catch
up: "... I concluded to Camp, Peeled Some bark to lay on, and
geathered wood to make fires to Keep off the musquitor & Knats."
Ft Osage was built in 1808 on the recommendation of Lewis &
Clark.
