A
reminder: On my road journey, I had to jump past the Missouri Breaks
to Ft Benton and Loma Montana. Now I will jump ahead from Coal Banks
Landing, east of Loma, to Great Falls. I drove US HWY 87 to Ryan Dam
Road, leading south, to Ryan Dam - the first of the Falls of the Missouri.
The Corps left the Missouri-Marias Rivers confluence on June 11th
and 12th, 1805. Captain Lewis left by land with four other Corps members.
Captain Clark and the rest stayed one more day to finish burying items
not needed, and to hide the red pirogue. Only the white one would
continue the journey. Lewis was hunting for the falls which he still
wasn't sure would be there. Clark was bringing the canoes along the
Missouri River. On the 13th Lewis found the Great Falls, in full June
flow, top. |
