The
Corps of Discovery spent the winter of 1804 - 1805 a few miles down
river at Fort Mandan. The fort sat across the Missouri from Mitutanka,
a large Mandan Village. The Knife River, Hidatsa villages proved to
be less hospitable to the Corps during the winter. Captain Lewis,
two interpreters, and six corpsmen took a tour of the various villages
nearby. The Hidatsa chiefs considered them a threat because of misinformation
fed to them by Mandan chiefs. Lewis denied these accusations, but
relations with the Hidatsa villages were never cordial during the
winter stay at Fort Mandan.
