Lewis & Clark Trail
Bad River - Pierre SD
The Corps of Discovery had its first confrontation here, at the confluence of the Bad and Missouri Rivers, top left. This view is from Laframboise Is. in Pierre. You are looking west across the Missouri at the mouth of Bad River, just to the left of the white house. L & C were holding a council with the Teton chiefs on a sandbar, located approximately where the island is in the photo, left. The view is from Lilly Park, Ft Pierre, at the mouth of Bad River, looking up the Missouri. When returning the chiefs to shore, some braves grabbed the tow cable and mast of the pirogue. Clark drew his sword and Lewis ordered the keelboat's guns into play. All ended quietly but with continued tension. You can imagine youself watching from the shore along with hundreds of Teton Sioux men, women, and children.
