California Trail Center - Elko NV
A group of wickiup models stands west of the center. Western desert Indians used these as temporary shelters. The center includes local native customs and reactions to the emigrant invasion of their land with artifacts and interpretive panels. A trail climbs to a hilltop overlooking the Humboldt River flowing west. The California Trail stayed well north of the river where it curves south. The trail reconnected with the river again at Carlin Canyon. The Greenhorn Cutoff, starting near the California Trail Center, stayed farther north, bypassing the narrow, twisting slot of Carlin Canyon.
